Advanced Ceramics * Companion Project
Companion projects relate to one another in a specific way. They might be part of a set, like two cups and saucers, or they might be different objects that match through surface decoration, like two vases.
For this project, you will create two or more companion pieces that match through form and/or surface decoration. You may use any handbuilding technique, and choose any forms, keeping in mind how you will show the viewer that your items are a set.

Advanced Ceramics
Each student has now been introduced to the basics of ceramics. In this class, they will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of each technique, as well as develop a personal style with the medium. I encourage students to take risks and push themselves to the limit to improve on their basic skills!
In this class, we will develop our basic skills further through both handbuilt and wheelthrown forms. We will focus on surface decoration as well as craftsmanship, as we get more and more familiar with each new technique. In addition to the class work, students will have bi-weekly assignments reinforcing the techniques we are studying, such as printing out images for a project idea, or sketching forms out before beginning a project.
I am so excited to have everyone for a second time, and I am looking forward to a great semester!!

Merging Styles
For this assignment, you will research and combine the styles of two different ceramic artists. Taking any combination of their forms or glazing styles, you will create your own “merged” piece that represents the influences of each artist.
Find artists that work in a way you are comfortable with--for example, if you want to work on the wheel, choose wheel artists, but If you want to handbuild, choose artists that work with slump molding, slab building, coiling etc.
Write a one-page essay to supplement and support your merged project. Include the following:
*One paragraph bio on each artist:
who the artist is
where they work
materials they use/specific types of clay, glaze, kilns
their inspirations, where they get their ideas
any other important or interesting facts
*One paragraph on similarities, differences between the two artists
*One paragraph (or so) on why you chose these two artists: what attracted you to their work, how your style is similar to theirs
The essay and project will be due on or before Friday, May 21
*extra 5 points on each if passed in early*
