Hollow Forms!

The most fun--and challenging--wheel project of the class....the Hollow Forms project! There are so many different creations you can make with hollow forms, either functional or sculptural...or a bit of both! Here are some ideas for using donut and orb creations.

You will decide where in the range of functional to sculptural your project will be. Combine two wheel-made form with handbuilding techniques, or cut up and reassemble two or more wheel-made forms to create your project!

Remember to keep checking our artists and to align yourself with one of their concepts!

Homework Assignment: Please answer the following questions in your journal in preparation for a mid-point critique on our Multimedia Masks, which we will have on Monday October 18th.

1. Describe what point you are at in your mask-making process, and what still needs to be done.

2. What aspects of your mask represent your personality?

3. What multimedia materials are you using in your mask?

4. What aspect of your mask would you like feedback from the group on? Pose a question that will help you as you finish your mask, maybe something you are unsure of or can't make a decision about.

Advanced Ceramics * Companion Project

Companion projects relate to one another in a specific way. They might be part of a set, like two cups and saucers, or they might be different objects that match through surface decoration, like two vases.

For this project, you will create two or more companion pieces that match through form and/or surface decoration. You may use any handbuilding technique, and choose any forms, keeping in mind how you will show the viewer that your items are a set.

Bodacious Bowls!

This project focuses on honing our wheel skills.

Objectives: Create a bowl form on the wheel that has even walls and a well-carved foot.
Glaze your bowl creatively, using dripping, spraying, layering, blending, wax resist, sgraffito, etc.

Essential Questions: Does your bowl have to be functional, symmetrical or traditional in order to be "acceptable"?
What happens between the planning and the doing? How do we embrace mistakes and challenges and turn them into successes?

Check out the examples for ideas!
HAVE FUN!!

Advanced Ceramics

Miss Mahoney

Each student has now been introduced to the basics of ceramics. In this class, they will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of each technique, as well as develop a personal style with the medium. I encourage students to take risks and push themselves to the limit to improve on their basic skills!

In this class, we will develop our basic skills further through both handbuilt and wheelthrown forms. We will focus on surface decoration as well as craftsmanship, as we get more and more familiar with each new technique. In addition to the class work, students will have bi-weekly assignments reinforcing the techniques we are studying, such as printing out images for a project idea, or sketching forms out before beginning a project.

I am so excited to have everyone for a second time, and I am looking forward to a great semester!!

Advanced Ceramics

Merging Styles

For this assignment, you will research and combine the styles of two different ceramic artists. Taking any combination of their forms or glazing styles, you will create your own “merged” piece that represents the influences of each artist.

Find artists that work in a way you are comfortable with--for example, if you want to work on the wheel, choose wheel artists, but If you want to handbuild, choose artists that work with slump molding, slab building, coiling etc.

Write a one-page essay to supplement and support your merged project. Include the following:

*One paragraph bio on each artist:

who the artist is

where they work

materials they use/specific types of clay, glaze, kilns

their inspirations, where they get their ideas

any other important or interesting facts

*One paragraph on similarities, differences between the two artists

*One paragraph (or so) on why you chose these two artists: what attracted you to their work, how your style is similar to theirs

The essay and project will be due on or before Friday, May 21

*extra 5 points on each if passed in early*

SOOOO PROUD OF ALL OUR SENIORS!!

The Senior Show looks great, and is still up at the Central Office (next to Harrington school) for viewing from 9-3 each day...the show was entirely put together by students under the direction of Ms. Cara Bean (check out her blog, it's hilarious! beandoodling.blogspot.com)

Linoleum Tile Relief

This project focuses on texture and depth of the relief you carve. Use either the entire Lino block as a rectangle, or cut it into a square, and draw your design on in pencil.

Carefully carve the design in using the linoleum cutters--try varying the tips you use to get different textures!

Print your tile in the clay at any time to see how your design is going--then turn your finished prints into a slab box, cylinder, trivet or hanging decoration!

Advanced Ceramics * Final Review

For your final review in this class, you will choose two of your pieces to compare that show your growth in a specific area. You might choose two wheel pieces, or two handbuilt pieces, or two pieces that were created by different techniques but that show your growth in color and glazing techniques. They can both be from Advanced, or the first one can be from Beginning. Bring both pieces in, and please write an approximately one-page personal assessment of your Ceramics career; be sure to include the following:

*What technique do you feel you have improved the most on in your two semesters as a ceramicist?

*What projects have you found to be the most challenging?

*What are some of the “lessons” you have learned as you have taken both Beginning and Advanced Ceramics?

*Which of your projects are you most proud of?

*Define a theme for your work in Ceramics. What has your focus been on, mostly? Surface decoration? Handbuilding techniques? Wheel work? And within that specific area, how could the viewer tell that each of your pieces is “yours”?
